Torus-stable zone above starspots

چکیده
Whilst intense solar flares are almost always accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME), reports on stellar CMEs rare, despite the frequent detection of 'super flares'. The torus instability magnetic flux ropes is believed to be one main driving mechanisms CMEs. Suppression instability, due confining background field that decreases sufficiently slowly with height, may contribute lack CME detection. Here we use as template estimate vertical extent this 'torus-stable zone' (TSZ) above active region. For an idealised potential model comprising fields local bipole (mimicking pair starspots) and global dipole, show upper bound TSZ increases size, dipole strength, source surface radius where becomes radial. boundaries depend interplay between spots' dipole's fields, which provide local- global-scale confinement, respectively. They range from about half size significant fraction radius. smaller spots intermediate field, secondary arises at higher altitude, increase likelihood 'failed eruptions'. Our results suggest low apparent occurrence rate cool stars is, least partially, presence extended TSZs.

Gamma - gamma absorption above a molecular cloud torus in blazars
Gamma rays have been observed from two blazars at TeV energies. One of these, Markarian 421, has been observed also at GeV energies and has roughly equal luminosity per decade at GeV and TeV energies. Photon-photon pair production on the infrared background radiation is expected to prevent observation above ∼ 1 TeV. However, the infrared background is not well known and it may be possible to ob...

متن کاملStarspots and Exoplanets
The discovery of exoplanets has resulted from a significant increase in the precision of stellar radial velocity measurements. In the past decade this precision has improved from several hundreds of m s 1 to a few m s 1. In the near future astrometric measurements will make a similar increase in their precision by factors of several hundred. Although discovering exoplanets is driving the need f...
متن کاملReactive infiltration of hydrous melt above the mantle transition zone
[1] Seismic studies repeatedly image a low‐velocity layer overlying the mantle transition zone in tectonic settings ranging from subduction zones to continental cratons. This layer has been hypothesized to result from the presence of a dense partial melt formed by dehydration melting as relatively wet transition zone material is advected by convection currents into the low‐water‐solubility uppe...
متن کاملA Phenomenological Model for the Extended Zone above Agb Stars
I suggest the existence of an extended zone above the surface of asymptotic giant branch (AGB), as well as similar stars experiencing high mass loss rates. In addition to the escaping wind, in this zone there are parcels of gas that do not reach the escape velocity. These parcels of dense gas rise slowly and then fall back. The wind and bound gas exist simultaneously to distances of ∼ 100 AU. I...
